Eczema
Eczema is a s
skin disorder that appears as
dry, reddened skin, sometimes
with a scale and crust. Intense
itching or pruritus can be
present, which can lead to
scratching and skin infections.
Eczema usually
occurs on the face, neck and
insides of the elbows, knees and
ankles and in the United States
alone affects more than 15
million people of all ages. In
my experience, it usually is
hereditary.
A highly
allergic type of eczema is
called Atopic Dermatitis. People
with this condition usually
flare with change or extremes
such as very hot or very cold
weather or stress and can be
especially sensitive to fuzzy
clothing and skin infections.
Treatment
options for eczema include a new
class of drugs called topical
immunomodulators, which suppress
the skin's immune response as
well as
photo or light therapy including
both ultraviolet B & A light
waves. Topical medications
including cortisone, tars and
emollients and moisturizers are
frequently utilized.
